Sync with GitHub

GitHub sync keeps a copy of your code in a repository you own, updated after every build. Use it as a backup, to work on the code elsewhere, or to hand it to another tool.

  1. Press Files in the editor’s header and choose the Integrations tab.
  2. Under GitHub, press Connect. A window opens at GitHub.
  3. Sign in there if needed. If GitHub asks you to install the Anela app on your account, install it and come back.
  4. Anela creates a private repository on your account, named after your project (lowercase, with dashes), and pushes the project’s whole history into it. If that name is taken, it adds a number.

The connection belongs to this project. Another project connects on its own.

Always sync is on from the start: every time a build finishes, Anela pushes the new version to the repository. Switch it off in the same panel and nothing moves until you press Push.

  • Push sends what is in your project to GitHub. It works even while the project is asleep.
  • Pull brings changes made on GitHub into your project. It wakes the project.
  • The panel shows how many changes are ahead or behind, and says when GitHub cannot be reached.

Before every push, Anela checks the files for anything that looks like a key, a password or a token. If it finds one, the push is refused and the message names the file and the line. Move the value into the Secrets panel in the Assets tab, remove it from the file, and push again.

The project’s settings file, .env, is part of the repository because restores depend on it, but a line in it that carries a credential stops the push.

On the GitHub account you signed in with. Choosing an organization is not built yet; if you need the repository elsewhere, move it on GitHub afterwards. What Anela does not do yet.

GitHub’s access expires after a while. When the panel says the connection needs renewing, press Reconnect; the repository stays as it is. Disconnect removes the link between the project and the repository; the repository itself is untouched.
